It’s Healthy to Have High Self-Esteem

love yourself have healthy self-esteem

Love yourself.

In honor of the month of love, I am going to offer some great info I wrote a few years ago with my BIG Life project.

People often describe their self-esteem like a thermometer. It goes up and down. If someone is complimenting them or they have done a good job, they have high self-esteem. But if someone belittles them or their work, they tend to have low self-esteem. I especially find this an interesting topic with women. And after speaking to women in workshops, seminars and at my conferences for 25 years, I know this is one area we need to work on.

Every individual needs to have a healthy level of high self-esteem, quite simply because it affects every aspect of one’s life.

Having a good self-esteem is essential, because:

  • It helps you feel good about yourself and everything you do.
  • It translates into belief in yourself, giving you the courage to try new things.
  • When you have good self-esteem, you will know that you’re smart enough to make your own decisions.
  • When you honor yourself, you will make choices that nourish your mind and body.
  • You will value your safety, your feelings and health. Therefore, you will choose to make healthier eating choices, exercising, or taking time off to do something you like (without feeling guilty about not doing something for somebody else).

Since the reality is our self-esteem does fluctuate, here are some tips to help you.

  • Learn to love and accept yourself. Women are really hard on themselves; me included—whether it is that my hair didn’t turn out great—or my aging body. On the other hand, I love the person I am. So let’s accept our flaws in all their glory and love ourselves. We are magnificent human beings.
  • Use positive self-talk. I read that at the end of a day, women think about all the things they did not finish. Pat yourself on the back for the 50 things you did finish in a day. Women are amazing at juggling many responsibilities and people throughout the day. Kudos to you and me!
  • Listen to inspirational speakers. Even though I am a motivational and inspirational speaker who uplifts thousands of women around the country, I have my bad days too. There are times I feel lonely, or miss my husband (now deceased), or struggle with life. I also have several people I admire and I read their books often. And I listen to their audio programs and watch their videos.
  • Learn to be your own superstar! Sometime women only feel great about themselves when they are around certain people. I know women who only feel good about themselves because of who they married—a doctor or lawyer. But you have your own great gifts inside you. So release them to the world and shine in your own right!

Whether you are a male or female, I hope you will give yourself extra love this month. You deserve it because there is no one like you!

It’s your turn. Let’s talk about ways that you cultivate healthy self-esteem in the comments below. I can’t wait to hear from you.
