As I sit in my office today (still getting used to saying “my office”) I am looking around at the items on my desk. They aren’t all that different than the items that were on my desk 13 years ago when I began my career as an administrative assistant. Sure there have been advancements – my computer no longer has a tower and I have to be very careful not to touch the screen at the wrong time as it now has touch screen capabilities. But what about those unsung hereos of the desktop? You know who I’m talking about, specifically the pencil sharpener and the stapler. Without these staples of the desktop, if you will pardon my blatent pun, we’d have loose papers and dull pencil tips! It isn’t the end of the world but it sure can be annoying!
I have to tell you that keeping a pencil sharpener close is important for me. I just love a freshly sharpened pencil! We’ve been using a Swingline in our office for years now. We recently got a new Swingline Optima Electric Pencil Sharpener for our office that is the upgraded sharpener of the future (kinda like my touchscreen towerless computer). This sharpener is adjustable to sharpen 6, count ’em folks, S I X differently sized pencils. It’s fast with a large space to hold your shavings and thank heavens it is spill resistant! A nice little bonus feature is that it has two small areas to hold a few freshly sharpened pencils at hand! We’ve already used ours for countless packs of colored pencils, #2 pencils (best used for filling in bubbles while test taking) and the really fat pencils (just to test out the size adjustability feature). So far, I dig it.
Next up, the Swingline Smooth Grip Stapler. I have actually gone through a number of staplers in the last 13 years. First, the cheaper ones junk up on you getting jammed by staples. Second, they tend to wander off. Apparently staplers have legs and like to mozey on over to your office mates cubicle when you aren’t looking. Finally, just looking at the stapler on my desk can bring a smile to my face when I remember the movie, Office Space and it’s character Milton.
Milton Waddams: [talking on the phone] And I said, I don’t care if they lay me off either, because I told, I told Bill that if they move my desk one more time, then, then I’m, I’m quitting, I’m going to quit. And, and I told Don too, because they’ve moved my desk four times already this year, and I used to be over by the window, and I could see the squirrels, and they were married, but then, they switched from the Swingline to the Boston stapler, but I kept my Swingline stapler because it didn’t bind up as much, and I kept the staples for the Swingline stapler and it’s not okay because if they take my stapler then I’ll set the building on fire…
Milton was pretty extreme about his stapler but that’s how we can be about our desktop necessities, right?
Some of the cool things about the smooth grip that provide you with optimum performance are it’s soft grip surface that enhances the feel and control of your stapling abilities. You can use it on the desktop or handheld. It’s lightweight, durable and can staple up to 20 sheets together!
I know you are wondering why would I be so passionate about sharing my joy for a freshly sharpened pencil or stapling documents together with you, aren’t you?
