BIG Focus: Focus On One Goal In Each Major Area of Your Life

How many goals have you written over the years that you did not accomplish, took longer than you thought, or didn’t turn out like you wanted? If you are like most people, the answer is “several.”

It is hard to decide what we want in life, then communicate that in a concise manner, write a plan, implement and work around the barriers. If goal achievement were easier, more people would be reaching their goals. Goal achievement can come in the form of what we want to feel, accomplish or give to others; it’s not just about getting material things.

For me, I have an ongoing goal of inspiring others to be the best they can be professionally and personally. Then within that big picture goal, I have several sub-goals with action steps. I also have goals in the 5 Pillars of Life: Career, Family, Financial, Spiritual and Wellness.

How do I focus on a goal after the excitement has worn off?

Once your goal is defined, then you need Staying Power! I’m not talking about staying power that only lasts 3 or 4 months. I’m talking about real Staying Power; the kind that pushes you through when everything is working against you. The kind of power that makes you keep going even when it would be easier to forget your idea. Robert Schuller says, “Tough times never last but tough people do.” I absolutely agree. Maybe at work, you will feel like you are on an uphill battle to create change and want to give up . . . don’t!

Most people start out with tons of energy when they set a goal, but then as the months pass and life happens, they lose focus or become distracted by things and people who move them away from their goal. Just think about how you felt in January of this year. I bet you said you were going to change and do all sorts of things, like working out. It is now four months later—how have you done? I hope great and if so, good for you.

Now you have to keep it going. It’s only April. We have months ahead of us. If you have not made any progress, start today. No excuses! Regardless of where are you on the continuum, I would like you to set 1 goal in each of the 5 Pillars of BIG Life: Career, Family, Financial, Spiritual and Wellness. This should be something you want to accomplish in each area by September 1. Then break each goal into action steps. What do you have to do to make that happen?

And then remember . . . Staying Power!
