I am so excited to kick off 2015 with a bang for many reasons. One big reason is I am feeling great and healthy. Second is because Office Dynamics will be celebrating its’ 25th year anniversary all year long and boy, do we have surprises for you! So please take 2 minutes to read today’s Monday Motivator. It is a special message and I don’t want you to miss one word.
25 years! What have you done almost non-stop for 25 years? Maybe you have been married for 25 years; maybe you have worked in the same profession for 25 years; some of you have even worked at the same employer for 25 years; and many of you have lived in the same house or same city for 25 years.
Do you know what? I can’t say that about a lot of things. While I grew up in Ohio and lived there into my mid-20s, I did move away and have been gone ever since. I have lived in 8 states, not one of them more than 15 years (Las Vegas)! I was married 34 years before my husband’s passing away; and have been a mom for more than 30 years. But there aren’t a lot of things in life I can say I have loved and devoted my life to and been as passionate about as being a visionary for the administrative profession. I have embraced and dedicated my life to being a champion for specialized administrative training and coaching and inspiring excellence in administrative and executive assistants at every level in an organization.
While many times, it was an uphill battle, I really have loved serving the administrative career community and the executives those individuals support. It has been quite a journey and I am a better person for the people who were a part of this expedition. When I started Office Dynamics in 1990, there was not one company who devoted themselves solely to the mission of administrative excellence through in-depth training. While there were training companies, they provided training to people in various careers, not just one niche. When I started Office Dynamics I got hundreds of replies like this “No, we don’t train our secretaries; they don’t need it. We only invest in our management team.” But I was persistent in creating and building this niche that I knew needed to be filled. I was determined to break down the stereotypes of the role and have this profession seen as a career of choice.
It’s been a long, hard, fascinating journey and I am forever grateful to the thousands of assistants and administrators I have met and served; the hundreds of companies who believed in me and investing in their administrative professionals’ development; the hundreds of executives I have met who have been champions for the profession.
As I write you in January 2015, I can say with a big smile that there has been tremendous progress over 25 years. Today assistants see themselves as strategic business partners; savvy assistants invest in their own professional development; executives yearn to learn how to work effectively with their assistants; CEOs are willing to pay for private coaching for their EA; and Corporate Universities are holding ongoing training sessions designed just for their administrative community. “We’ve come a long way, baby!”
From the bottom of my heart, I want to thank you for being a part of the Office Dynamics journey and look forward to a tremendous 2015. Our team is eager to be of greater service and provide more value. We have 25 years of rock-solid experience and knowledge that you can count on and we are leading the trail into new territory—just as we have for the past 25 years. For about 18 of the past 25 years, I have been writing Monday Motivators™. Imagine that—week after week, year after year. You would think by now that I have nothing left to share with you. And many times, I often wonder, “What else do people need? What are people looking for? What will give them meaning? How can I make their lives better/happier? How can I help assistants be more productive at work?” I do have more to share because life is a never-ending journey and my hunger to learn does not stop.
Certain Truths That Never Change
As sure as the sun rises every day and the sun sets every night, there are certain truths to success that never change. As I look back at years of Monday Motivators’ advice, I see that much of what I wrote about 7 and 8 years ago, has not changed. These words of advice still hold solid ground today and will last the rest of my lifetime. And so, I want to take you on that journey during 2015. I will be sharing with you the best advice from the past with a 2015 spin.

Happy ‘New You!’ What’s Your Agenda This Year?
It’s a brand new year – and that means it’s a great time to look ahead and decide what to do with the time we have. Time is the most precious commodity, you know – more than silver or gold, stocks or bonds, or even the rarest items on earth. All those things, you can amass throughout your life. Time, however, is finite and, in the end, we can’t keep it.
To make the most of your time in 2015, spend a little time thinking about the following questions:
Am I happy in my professional life? (And by “happy,” I mean satisfied overall.) If the answer is “yes,” I suggest seeking new ways to expand your job so it continues challenging you and has the potential to offer you even greater rewards. If the answer is “no,” what can you do to fix that? Write down a list of the skills you have and love using on a daily basis. Is there a job you can advance to – or even a new career you might explore – that has the potential to be even more satisfying? This, of course, spins off into a whole series of additional questions to ask yourself, but acknowledging where you are in your career is the first step.
What three areas can I improve upon so management is aware of my valuable contributions? I love this question because it compels us to assess our strengths and weaknesses – and, ultimately, makes us even better. Identify areas of improvement – and then plan how to act on them. Find a mentor or “buddy” to help and guide you, if need be.
Are my goals aligned with higher-ups, as well as with my employer? You’ll want to be sure they are – because your professional success hinges on your being “in sync” with them. Here’s one idea: Ask to sit down with your leader and see whether the goals you’ve identified are similar or complementary (a good sign).
How can I demonstrate my professional value at review time? Personally, I suggest creating what I call a “career portfolio,” a folder where you can store all your accomplishments, award certificates and samples of outstanding work.
