We spent some time last week in our conference room brain storming ideas on what to do for our 19th Annual Conference for Administrative Excellence team building exercise. I think we are all feeling like we have such a huge expectation to ‘top that’ with this exercise. You see, in 2011, we had much success with our activity. The teams were charged with coming up with their top ways they add value in their work lives every day. The 24 teams in the room quickly went to work and jotted down their ideas. We then implemented a creative exercise for the 24 teams to design a book cover. The book cover and the title would be for the ideas they just came up with. The plan was to publish the book by Administrative Professional’s Day 2012 and share 50% of the books proceeds to St. Jude Children’s Hospital for the research and treatment of children’s cancer. The result was amazing. The teams voted out of the top three designs and the administrative professional’s book, Who Took My Pen … Again? was born.
The group donated their supplies from the activity to a local school in the Las Vegas, Nevada area where the majority of their student population is homeless, Whitney Elementary School. After hearing about the school’s situation, the tables also took it upon themselves to pool a donation for the school and placed a fishbowl at the back of the room where our guests dropped in cash to be given to the school. In addition to their donations Office Dynamics was able to make a donation when we dropped off the supplies and other household and office items donated not only by the company but our office staff.
So you can see why we may have had some struggle coming up with ideas on how to make this event’s team building exercise even better.
In the meantime we are still experiencing the success of the 2011 project. The book, Who Took My Pen … Again? (A collaborative effort by 240 administrative professionals and three authors; Joan Burge, Nancy Fraze and Jasmine Freeman) is at the top of the charts (still) on Amazon.com on their Best Seller list under the Secretarial and Training Aids category. It’s also listed as a Hot New Release and one of the Most Wished For products in its category.
Kudos to all the amazing administrative professionals who were able to be part of this project. The entire project was so amazing – I am sure you are wondering how could we top that? We will. Don’t worry; we always do!
