It’s COOL to be an Administrative Professional because “my thinking is stimulated — my brain is actively engaged and my thinking blossoms because of who I support.” These gems of wisdom came from an administrative assistant who attended one of my workshops a week ago.
When I work with assistants, I will often hear about the tremendous workload they manage, the variety of duties, and the breadth of their responsibilities. It’s easy to see why administrative assistants and executive assistants feel overwhelmed, under-appreciated, and stressed. However, there is a good side to all of this. It’s truly a matter of perspective.
In other words, if you worked for me, I would have very high expectations of your performance. (The bar would be high.) I expect and believe people can and will step up to the plate. They may not initially know what to do or how to handle something or a new assignment, but if they are capable of learning….. they will figure it out. Yes, every once and awhile in the 20 years of owning my business there were individuals (actually only 2) who could not handle the demands placed upon them by me and our business. And you know what? They were gone in a few months. That happens in any career, though. I heard a fabulous speaker years ago at our training conference say, “If an employee is not a good fit with an organization’s culture, they will be ejected or they will eject themselves.”
I imagine that most of you reading this Blog work for intelligent people. And I would hope that the majority of you are challenged by your managers and leaders. I hope they don’t let you rest on your laurels. I would be concerned if my manager didn’t set high goals for me because that means they are saying to themselves, “This person is not capable so I better not set the bar too high.” Now that is something to worry about.
The administrative profession is so COOL because most of the time you are working side-by-side with smart people. So be a sponge. Soak up everything you can and let your brain be shaken up. It’s good for you. It’s actually healthy and will keep you young at heart (as well as marketable and valuable).
It’s so COOL to be in the administrative career.
