NOW IS THE TIME
The 70-30 Rule
This formula helps you to know how to balance the hard skills with your natural talents to achieve greatness everyday at work as an administrative professional.
Welcome to video number three and your future. This one is called the 70-30 rule and I bet you’re wondering what that’s about! Well I’m happy to say that I am really excited about this one because it came to light during all the research I’d been doing over the past year with managers, executives, human resources personnel, and even administrative assistants.
So what is it? It’s very simple! Remember, Adminology® is a formula. I am going to give you the formula today! 70% of your job should consist of the basic functions and tasks of an administrative professional. Now let’s think about that. What are some of the basic tasks, projects, or items that you perform on a regular basis? I’ve come up with a short list of general responsibilities:
- Appointment coordination
- Meeting preparation
- Managing your E-mail
- Managing your managers E-mail
- Handling the telephone
- Greeting your visitors
All in all, we go back to the basics. What is it that you do on a regular basis from day to day? That should be 70% of your job.
Now we find the 30%; the 30% makes me really excited because this is the one that allows you to use a lot of your natural skill and talents. In other words, every individual has certain areas and things that we are naturally good at. I call it our DNA! It’s how we’re wired. It’s tapping into your special gifts and talents and bringing them forth. Next you should go to your executive or manager and have them assign you task that enhance your talents. The idea is a manager needs to and should be leveraging your talents, this way, everyone is going to win.
So, let’s go through the action steps! They are:
- Make a list of the things you are really good at. Things you’re naturally good at or the things that make you happy while at work.
- How are you going to bring them forth? You’ll either have to create something that allows you to use those talents so your manager can see those talents. Or you’ll have to sit and talk with your manager and explain to them the different talents you have to offer and how they can assign you tasks and projects that will allow you to use your gifts and your talents.
