Self-Improvement: Spruce Up Your Appearance

Welcome to the last Monday of September!

When was the last time you changed your hair style? Color? Cut? What about your eyewear—is it modern and attractive for your face shape? When was the last time you spent hours in a clothing store trying on styles or colors that you never would have touched in the past?

Talk about noticeable self-improvement . . . our visual appearance is a huge area where minor improvements could be major wows! You don’t have to go to the extreme of facelifts—although I know many women younger than me who had eyelid lifts and they look fantastic.

It is amazing how making one change in our physical appearance can positively affect our attitude. I remember years ago, after Dave had been fighting pancreatic cancer for months on end, I was so sick of everything in life. My energy and spirit was depleted. I felt like I could not go on one more day. I had decided to try a new beautician after going to the same stylist (who I loved), Melina, for 8 years. Wow, that is scary for me. My hair is very thick, naturally curly and wavy and coarse. When we first moved to Las Vegas, it took me several bad hair dos before I found Melena. As I said, this was a big step but I could care less because I had felt like I was done with life.

I told the new stylist to do what she wished. She went to town. As she was first creating the new look, I thought, “Oh no.” But then it was, “Oh, wow. I think I’m going to like this.” And I did. For months, people who saw me in my new style said I looked years younger. Oh my—really? I was happy with the compliments. I stayed with the new stylist for several years until she had to retire from the business due to medical reasons. I miss her terribly.

Making small or big positive adjustments to your apparel, eyewear, jewelry, hair style or hair color can have a positive impact on you professionally.

  • People who did not take you seriously may look at you in a new light.
  • If you upgrade your casual attire, you will be viewed as a “leader” among your peers.
  • Your self-esteem will sky rocket.
  • Others will want to collaborate and work with you.
  • You will have more pep in your step.
  • When we wear attire that is more in line with today’s trends (but not overly trendy), we give the impression that we are up on what is going on in the world.

And who knows what affect these changes could have on your personal life?

Of course make wise selections. You might want to enlist the services of a consultant. Or bring a friend with you the next time you go shopping who has great taste.

Have fun this week. Shake it up a bit!
