WEEK 18: Professionalism Works For Me
Every single day you are on stage whether you are talking on the telephone, sending an e-mail, or walking into your manager’s office. Week #18 builds on what Joan talked about earlier in the series about your professional trademark. Join us as Joan digs deeper into this subject and also learn about the ‘halo’ effect.
Welcome to week eighteen, professionalism works for me. We did cover this topic in week 9, and if you haven’t seen it, I’d like to advise you to revisit that webinar. I’m not going to reiterate what I’ve already taught you, all I’d like to do is elaborate and dig deeper on the subject.
To start, I would like to read the intro from the book Underneath it All, (page 73. chpt.. 4) it reads: “People decide to like you, trust you, do business with you all because you impress them. You make them feel safe and comfortable. They believe goals shall be accomplished in your capable hands. People who like you are usually eager to please you too. How do you earn this enviable status? You must look and act the part. In short, you groom yourself to be the consummate professional.”
There are three (3) key points I’d like to share with you today. They are: You are on stage everyday: As you commute thru out your office, you are constantly on stage. As you make contact with people, they are watching you they are forming opinions on you etc… This could work in your favor if you’re taking center stage every day.
You display a professional trade mark: What would be some examples? Mary is always smiling, Bill is very well organized, Linda is a really compassionate person, and these are all trade marks. You have to be sure to make the trade mark for who you want to be known by. You want your trade mark to work for you not against you. Don’t be known for a negative trade mark; be known for the positive ones.
When you feel good about yourself, you feel good about others: That is the bottom line! What ever you’re feeling inwardly, you reflect it outwardly. When you are at your professional best, you reflect that on the people around you.
Activity for the week, I would like for you to answer this question… What is the value you would derive from projecting a professional image?
For those of you who have the Underneath it All book, you can in a group or individually do the exercise in chapter 18.
Have a great week and remember, you’re on stage every single week!
Until Next Time…
