Well, it’s official—the year is half over! What kinds of changes have you experienced so far this year? Have you experienced personal changes? Career changes? Did changes occur that you did not expect? Were they pleasant changes or not-so-pleasant? Can you forecast changes coming up the next few months? What about big changes?
I love speaking on and writing about change because it is something everyone can relate to personally or professionally. I have been speaking about thriving on change since 1990. As you read this Monday Motivator, think about yourself and changes you are experiencing have experienced or will be experiencing the next two months.
Reaction to Change
A natural reaction to change is fear of the unknown. People would much rather stay in their comfort zones where they feel safe and secure. Change that you initiate, however, can be challenging and rewarding. It is no mere accident of fate that determines who thrives on change; it is a process totally within your control.
We can have fear of:
• the unknown
It is extremely important to recognize your fear and face it. Fear can prevent you from progressing in your career and from growing as an individual. Fear will stop you from achieving the things you want in life—either for yourself or your family. Fear can become a monster that grows. When dealing with fear, ask yourself, “What is the worst possible outcome?” Then decide how you will handle that should it happen. Haven’t you ever been afraid to try something but you did it anyways? Afterward, you realized it wasn’t as bad as you thought it would be.
If you are like most of the people I meet, you have an inner desire to do something, achieve something, take a risk or step out in some way. Stepping out takes courage. But what if you don’t have the courage to step out? What if a friend, spouse, children or coworker share their doubts about the change you want to make and you do nothing? Mark Twain says, “Courage is not the absence of fear; it is resistance to fear—mastery of fear.”
So as you are deciding whether or not to step out and change something in your life, after you have weighed the pros and cons then feel the fear, embrace the fear and have the courage to move forward.
